23rd Summer School in International and Development Economics - A great success!

Summer School
26/09/2024

The 23rd edition of the Summer School just concluded with great success, reaffirming its status as a key event for development economics PhD students in Italy.

As usual, the Summer School was held at the picturesque Castello di Gargonza, a medieval village in the Tuscan countryside, and it was co-organized by Centro Studi Luca d’Agliano, Fondazione Collegio Carlo Alberto and Vilfredo Pareto Doctoral Program in Economics of the University of Turin, DEMS-University of Milan Bicocca, LEAP–Bocconi University, Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), International Growth Centre (IGC).

This edition featured top-tier lectures from renowned experts Claudio Ferraz (University of British Columbia, PUC-Rio, and NBER) and Sandra Sequeira (London School of Economics and CEPR).

Gonzalo Ares de Parga Regalado, a PhD student in Economics and Finance at Bocconi University, shared their experience:

As a PhD student in Economics and Finance at Bocconi University, I am researching the linkages between migration networks, remittances, and financial systems. Attending the PhD School organized by LEAP and Centro Studi Luca D'Agliano was an invaluable experience. The lectures on political economy and development by Professors Sequeira and Ferraz enriched my understanding of how conflict influences migration, which inspired me to consider how these dynamics also impact financial institutions, particularly banks. This event offered a unique opportunity to engage with other PhD students and scholars, sparking new ideas on how conflict-driven migration affects remittances and deposits flows. The interdisciplinary approach of the summer school has significantly shaped my research, linking political and economic shocks to financial stability.

This year's edition has once again demonstrated the Summer School’s vital role in fostering academic collaboration, innovation, and inspiration among the next generation of development economists.

Looking forward to next year’s edition!
