The European Economic Association (EEA) has announced that Eliana La Ferrara, LEAP Scientific Director and Full Professor of Development Economics at Bocconi, has won the 2020 Birgit Grodal Award, reserved for a Europe-based female economist who has made a significant contribution to the Economics profession.

The Birgit Grodal prize has been awarded to Eliana La Ferrara “for her significant contributions in studying the role of trust, norm enforcement and identity in economics. Her work brings theoretical insights to data in innovative ways to provide robust empirical evidence on these issues. She is an excellent communicator, and has provided important leadership, most recently in terms of creating a thriving European Job Market. The EEA is pleased to be rewarding such a talented individual and the Association warmly congratulates the winner”, wrote the Award Committee including Rachel Griffith (Chair), Ernst Fehr, Rohini Pande, Helene Rey and Christian Schultz in their motivation.

“I’m honored to receive the Award”, Professor La Ferrara said, “and all the more so since the motivation acknowledges both research and service contributions”.

The award is named after Birgit Grodal, who was the first female elected President of the EEA, but sadly passed away in 2004 before she was due to take up her presidency. Since 2012, the Birgit Grodal Award is bestowed every even-numbered year and is sponsored by Danmarks Nationalbank.
